Right from the Garden of Eden, mankind had at many times violated God’s commandments of trusting Him and remaining faithful to Him. Action such as this is seen by God as rejecting Him by human beings. When this happens, God will temporarily hand His people over to their enemies. God did this many times to the Israelites. One of such occasion is recorded in 2 Kings 17: 20. God’s rejection by His people is usually followed with terrible consequences on the part of the people. Most often, God stirred up outsiders to invade those who rejected Him as their Sovereign Lord. The enemies will deal with the people so heinously and heartlessly. One of such occasion is found in today’s devotional lead passage. The Psalmist captured this graphically when he said: “You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us…” (Psa. 60: 1 NIV).
God’s inciting enemies to attack His people who rejected Him is not to destroy them completely, but to make them turn to Him and remain His people. He is ever full of love and mercy. Those who understand God in this way do not turn to outsiders for help. King David knows this very well. In the case here, King David cried out to God and said: “You have been angry, now restore us. You have shaken the land and tore it open; mend its fractures for it is quaking. You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger…save us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered” (Psa. 60: 2 -3, 5 NIV). As seen from King David here, it is foolishness to turn to mankind for help when in the mercy of desperate circumstances. The case could be worst and more devastating; especially when God approves of the situation due to people rejecting His Sovereignty.
The important lesson in today’s devotional is that, God’s intervention in times of troubles and desperations is the ultimate. Man’s help is worthless. King David turned to God, prayed and asked for His help. He told God that since God is He who rejected them, the only thing God should do for him is to give the aid (Psa. 60: 10 – 11).
Evidently, every sane living person knows that the entire world is in daring need of Divine Interventions. Only the atheists can argue that the hopeless situations in the world today are not rooted to peoples’ rejection of God. We are not for arguments here but for acknowledging this as fact and truth. We should not look for peoples’ help as that will amounts to worthless effort. We need to seek God and turn our cries to him. He will respond. This is what He is waiting for. The Bible said in Psa. 14: 2. “…And ye shall seek me, and fine me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jer. 29: 13 KJV).
PRAYERS:
1. FATHER, open thou our eyes to behold how grievously we have offended you. Give us soft hearts to confess our evil deeds as we are ready to seek your face in Jesus name.
2. GOD OF MERCY, there is none of us in this world who has not turned from you as His or Sovereign Lord. Nevertheless, turn your merciful face towards us once more and hear our cries in Jesus name.
POSITIVE DECLARATION:
I believe that God is able to deliver us once again. His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting.
