There are more than thousand and one things we do as humans that God hates. By self-justification, we exonerated ourselves from some of these sins, or we take them not too serious as such. One of those sins is act of profanity. These rebellious acts are seen everywhere in different magnitudes. Profanity covers larger areas of human offenses against God. The Bible contains so many actions tantamount to profanity. Today’s devotional will describe few actions that are profanity or that which profane the name of the Lord.
The word “profane” in simple description is characterized by irreverence or contempt for God. It involves irreverence for sacred principles or things. This means showing dishonor for sacred or holy things by action or in principle. Any behaviour of irreligious character is profanity. Any act or behaviour not devoted to holy or religious purposes is interpreted as profanity. When we treat God’s name with ignominy we profane His name. When we fear idols or accord respect to them higher than God, we have profaned the name of the Lord. When we go to a worship hall and destroy sacred things deliberately and in pride, we have profaned the name of the Lord. When we break into a house of God, in this case, a church or mosque and destroy things, carted away valuable things as loots, we have profaned His name. We can see therefore, that profaning God’s name is everywhere today.
Another area the name of the Lord is profaned is total disregard to the ordinances, the good things God wants us do on the earth. God hates people who, out of pride refuse honouring His Holy Days. This is mentioned in Ezekiel 22: 8 that the people of Israel have despised His holy things and profaned His Sabbath. All these and others to be mentioned in the second series are ways we profane the name of God. Many Christians reading this devotional may think things mentioned here are Old Testament Ordinances. God’s Ordinances are never categorized as archaic. We cannot disconnect the commandments of God in the Old Testament from those Christian living standards contained in the New Testament. When we go against whatever God detests, His wraths go after us, either now or after. This is because acts of profanity attract God’s hate and judgments.
PRAYERS:
1. Kindly think of anything you have done to depict your total disrespect to God. Confess them and ask Him for mercy and forgiveness.
2. Pray generally for Nigerians who have taken it upon themselves going into churches and mosques killing and destroying sacred things as well as committing other atrocities without reverence for God. Ask God to forgive them and change their hearts in Jesus name.
