In the heart of Cross River State, Nigeria, the picturesque town of Ugep Eburutu (Yakurr) came alive with the grand finale of the Leboku Festival, a traditional celebration of the new yam harvest.
The event reached its climax with the majestic appearance of the Etangala masquerade, led by the revered Obol (Chief) Okoi Obono-Obla, traditional Chief Priest of Ugep Eburutu, the Etangala, and the traditional ruler of Letamkpankom Kingdom.
As I reflect on this joyous occasion, I am filled with nostalgia, remembering my deep roots in the Letamkpankom Kingdom. It was here that I was honored with the traditional chieftaincy title of Obol Kobil 1, meaning “Protective Shield of the Kingdom.” This esteemed title, bestowed upon me by His Highness Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, symbolizes my commitment to Nigeria’s and the kingdom’s progress and my unwavering support for its leader, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, the Etangala of Ugep.
My serendipitous meeting with Chief Okoi Obono-Obla on Facebook in 2020 marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship, one that has flourished against all odds. Our bond has been a source of inspiration to many and a testament to the power of unity and shared values.
As I relive the magic of the Leboku Festival through the pictures and video clips below, I offer heartfelt gratitude to God for the blessings of friendship, family, and community. May our union continue to bear fruit and may God bless all who have supported us on this journey.
