The Spirit of the Fear of the LORD is the last in the series we have run for the past twelve days now. Definitely, some may argue that Jesus Christ might not be considered as having the fear of the LORD at heart because He was the Son Of God. This is because many people see ‘fear’ as trembling behaviour before a highly superior person. The fear of the LORD the Bible is talking here, which is found in Proverbs 23: 17 means “having reverence for the LORD.” In other words, it is being in “a continual submission to God in humility and faith. The Spirit of the fear of the Lord makes one he is upon to have deep respect for God, become very obedient to the words of God, be completely humble for God and develop hate for anything evil. This is the Spirit that Jesus Christ operated in, alongside others.
With the Spirit of the LORD upon Jesus, He never do His Father’s works according to His own will, but all as His Father asked Him to do (John 6: 38). Jesus, through the Spirit of the fear of the LORD loves carrying out the commandments of God without flouting any (John 14: 31). Through the Spirit of the fear of the LORD, Jesus honoured God to the extent that He refused to seek for His personal glory in anything (John 8: 49). According to Psalm 112: 1, fearing God is equal to delighting in His commands, and following the principles of His Laws (Psa. 119: 63). And, Jesus did exactly this while He was on the earth.
As Christians, reverencing God cannot be optional but obligatory and willingly out of obedience. The fear of the LORD got nothing to do with hypocritical living but in a total broken of Spirit, yielding self completely in submission to His wills. As Christians, we show our reverence to God by cleansing ourselves of all filthiness and perfecting ourselves in holiness so that God Himself will be delighted in us. Fearing God, which in the context of Bible application under discussion here, involves surrendering all that we think are valuable to the world to God and taking upon ourselves true worshipping God in Spirit and truth (John 4: 23 – 24). We as Christians should know that allowing ourselves to reverence God brings upon us lots of benefits too. This will be looked into in the next devotional after this one. The question to answer before then is: “What is the nature of your fear of the LORD before today?
PRAYER:
HOLY SPIRIT OF JEHOVAH, Kindly breath upon my heart and minds, the right ways of reverencing Jehovah my Father. I look forward to seeing how God will be delighted in me as I reverence His name and commands. Amen.
