BUBA RE-ITERATES CALL FOR GLOBAL ACTION TO END CORONA VIRUS. … Appeals to Nigerians in Affected Places Abroad to Co-operate with Local Authorities on Safety Measures. Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs,Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub,has again called on the international community to rally behind China to stem the upsurge in the new strain of the corona virus,which was discovered in China’s Wuhan Province a few weeks ago, and has spread to other parts of the world. Hon. Buba,who spoke to newsmen and members of the Nigerian community in Ethiopia yesterday shortly after arriving Addis Ababa as part of the entourage of President Muhammadu Buhari for the 33rd Session of the African Union Summit in that country, expressed sympathies and solidarity with the Government and people of China,who he observed,have had to deal with a case that took the entire world by surprise. He said the outbreak was regrettable and has crippled social,academic, economic and other activities in some parts of China, where people have had to stay indoors to avoid further spread of the virus. Hon. Buba,however, pointed out that he had it on sound authority that welfare and other supplies were being provided to certain areas and people,including some Nigerian students,living in the affected areas. While using the opportunity to commend the commitment of the Chinese authorities for the welfare of those resident in the affected areas,the Gombi/ Hong lawmaker, also,appealed to foreign nationals,especially, Nigerians,who are affected by the shutdowns in those parts of China to co- operate with the local authorities in observing prescribed safety measures that are aimed at their common good. Buba said: ” As Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs,I spoke with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria shortly before embarking on this trip to Ethiopia. He assured me that all was well with Nigerians in China and that they will continue to do their best to protect and assuage the emotional toll the situation is taking on those Nigerians for whom the House Committee on Foreign Affairs had expressed concern. The Committee was satisfied with what we were told and wish to assure you all that, alongside the Federal Government and under the able leadership of the Rt. Hon. Speaker,Femi Gbajabiamila,who has given every support to our Committee, we are monitoring situations over there and are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people in China” Continuing, Hon. Buba expressed sympathies with Nigerian families and parents that have their family members in China,stressing that,as a father with two sons and a daughter who are,equally,in China at the moment schooling,he shared in their anxiety and fear of the unknown,but quickly added that it was highly reassuring to continue to learn and know daily that the situation was under strong control with continuous feelers that were emanating from China.
