GOV. SANWO-OLU SUES FOR REPS’SUPPORT FOR TWO MORE PORTS FOR LAGOS
…As Reps Ad Hoc Committee on Eastern Ports Maximum Use Visits Lagos.
Lagos State Governor,Babajide Sanwo-Olu,has said that part of the measures the State has taken to decongest the areas around the existing port complexes in Lagos is to seek approval of the necessary authorities to build two more port complexes, one in Badagri and the other in Lekki to serve users from the two major ends.
The Governor, who revealed the above ,Monday, when members of the House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee to Determine Why the Eastern Port Complexes of Warri,Calabar,Port Harcourt, Onne and Onitsha are Not Being Put to Maximum Use paid him a courtesy call, said the support of the lawmakers was necessary in order to achieve their dream of a permanent solution to the problems associated with decongestion around the two Lagos ports of Apapa and Tin Can Island.
Earlier, while informing the Governor and some members of the Lagos State Executive Council of the reason for the Committee’s visit,Chairman of the Committee, Hon.Yusuf Buba Yakub, said the visit arose from a Motion sponsored on the floor of the House to question why the ports earlier mentioned were not working well even when the Lagos ports were, obviously, operating beyond their established capacities.
“In the wisdom of our leader,Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, even before the Standing Committees of the House were announced ,he set up this Ad Hoc Committee to swing into action and to determine the issues at hand. Your Excellency,it is public knowledge that when the port complexes in the other parts of the country are made to function maximally, the Lagos ones will naturally be decongested.
” Our ports are like the nose through which not only the economy of Lagos State, but that of the entire country breathes. So, we are here to carry out the assignment of the House, but we cannot do this without coming to pay you this visit and get the blessing and support of your government for the job at hand. I thank Your Excellency and the people of Lagos for your warm welcome since we came in last night”,Hon.Buba ended.
Among Members present were Hons Ossy Prestige,Israel Goli,Maitala Haruna,Kolade Akinjo as well as Dr. Haruna Mshelia. Others include Hons Architect Al-Mustspha,Moshood Akiolu,Abiante Awaji,Aderemi Adewale as well as the mover of the Motion in the House,Anthony Ifeanyi Ibezim and Adegbenro of Apapa Federal Constituency.
