Chairman, Committee on Foreign Affairs and Member representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency in the 9th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. ( Dr.) Yusuf Buba Yakub , has said that the tenets of democracy in Nigeria would not have taken roots without the strong commitment of Nigerians to the virtues of democracy. The lawmaker praised the citizenry for understanding that, in a world where the people ought to constantly have a say on who drives their affairs per time, there can never be an alternative to democracy.
In his Democracy Day message to Nigerians, the Adamawa-born politician and real estate mogul lauded the sacrifice of those who laboured and even laid down their lives for our democracy to take roots. He congratulated Nigerians and the new Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the State Governors and the soon-to-be-inaugurated federal lawmakers on their contributions to sustaining democratic participation and all the activities that are aimed at enshrining democratic ideals and ethos in the people’s consciousness.
While urging all stakeholders in our national affairs to continue to maintain all civic responsibilities that will further deepen democratic ethos and participation among Nigerians, Rep Buba called on the Nigerian people to uphold the virtues of support and patience for the new set of leaders, stressing that the new leaders need time and understanding to settle in their new roles and to deliver on their vision for the people.
He said:”While I acknowledge that leadership comes with its own responsibility, it is also important to quickly add here that even followership has its own corresponding responsibility as well. We must, therefore, endeavour,in the spirit of our collective aspirations,to commit ourselves to offering the type of support and prayers that will make leadership deliver on its vision for the led.”
The lawmaker urged the people to support the government of the day and the policies that are being implemented for the benefit of the future. He added that “in the pursuit of every worthwhile dream, there is need for some amount of sacrifice and personal discomfort”. He, equally, expressed optimism that Nigerians will soon begin to see better times.
