Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people in Nigeria has strongly condemned the suspension and investigation of Cement and Cement Technology by the House of Representatives as introduced by the Minister of Works.
A press statement by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro Secretary-General Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide explained that the adoption of concrete technology in road pavement construction has been widely proven to be superior in terms of durability and longevity, with a life expectancy of more than fifty years.
According to the body, the notice motion initiated by Honourable Khadija Ibrahim from Yobe State is a direct affront to the collective will and welfare of Nigerians.
The statement reads, “the House of Representatives’ concern that the Minister of Works’ new policy on cement concrete pavement adoption may contradict technical specifications, potentially leading to contract breaches and potential arbitration and litigation during a difficult economic time, is misplaced.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly supports the Minister of Works’ vision to revolutionize road construction in Nigeria. The Minister’s campaign for the use of concrete technology in road pavement construction is not only commendable but also promises substantial economic benefits for the nation. The growth of the Nigerian economy and the subsequent chain of economic benefits to Nigerians cannot be understated.
“President Tinubu led Federal Executive Council (FEC) has already endorsed the Minister Dave Umahi’s Cement Technology due to its undeniable advantages.
“It is evident that the Minister is determined to prioritize the long-term welfare of Nigerians over the selfish gains of a few contractors who are clinging to outdated asphalt road construction methods. It is time to put an end to the economic waste associated with asphalt roads and embrace the superior alternative that guarantees longevity and cost-effectiveness.
“Furthermore, it is worthy of note that Minister Dave Umahi has offered these contractors an alternative. They have been allowed to swear under oath that their chosen asphalt method will guarantee a minimum durability of 20 years for the roads they construct. This option emphasizes the Minister’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards in infrastructure development while accommodating divergent views.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on behalf of the Igbo people and all well-meaning Nigerians, calls upon the leadership of the House of Representatives to prioritize the nation’s interest above the contract terms of a select few. The adoption of concrete technology in road construction is a crucial step towards sustainable development, economic growth, and improved infrastructure in Nigeria.
“We urge the House of Representatives to swiftly address this matter and provide the necessary support to the Minister of Works to implement his visionary policies. Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains committed to fostering unity, progress, and prosperity for all Nigerians, and we call on the House of Representatives to join us in this noble cause”, he said.
